You know the saying – “don’t judge a book by its cover.” Well, you also can’t judge a car’s cleanliness by its exterior alone. Many frequent car wash customers will regularly have the auto body cleaned but repeatedly ignore the carpets and upholstery. This means that dirt and stains can accumulate and deepen over long periods of time.

Whether you’re a car owner looking to finally tidy up, or a car wash owner/operator who wants to start providing interior detailing services that “floor” your customers, follow these pro tips for vehicle carpets and cloth.

Always Be Prepared

Have all your cleaning materials ready to go before you start. The most common equipment and tools include a vacuum for lifting debris, cleaning solutionscloth towels for blotting and removing stains, and an upholstery brush for scrubbing out the most difficult stains.

An Empty Vessel

Remove the mats before you begin cleaning as well as any other items that will get in the way of cleaning each and every inch of the carpet and upholstery. If you are cleaning a customer’s vehicle, you may be limited in what you can remove, but the emptier the car is, the better.

Suck It Up

A high-quality vacuum is key to making the cleaning process efficient and thorough. A vacuum is sufficient for your first pass through the interior. However, you can also offer your customers a combination vacuum and shampoo/spot remover in order to remove any residue stains on the carpet or upholstery.

Chemistry Test

While it’s important to use solutions that get the job done, you want to be sure you use them safely. Before applying any solution to an entire car, test out the product on a low-visibility section, like in the trunk. You don’t want to create permanent damage – bleaching or discoloration – in an attempt to solve a temporary problem like dirt.

Time Is On My Side

Follow the instructions on the chemical solutions you use. They are explicit about how long it takes for the active ingredients to run their course. Don’t cut corners! It took time for the dirt to accumulate and it’ll take time to be removed. Be patient. Ultimately, it wastes time if you end up having to repeat the process because the chemical wasn’t allowed to finish its job.

The Circle of Life

Give your carpets new life by using a nylon brush moved in a circular pattern to scrub out difficult stains. After brushing out stains, make sure you take plenty of time (again) to let the car dry before returning mats and other objects. Putting the mats back too early on a wet carpet can cause stinky mold to grow.

Man’s Best Friend?

Pet hair is a major annoyance and can take a long time to remove. Your basic tools for removing pet hair from a car interior are an air compressor and a vacuum.

As you can see, there are so many possible “solutions” to the problem of a dirty interior as there are different kinds of vehicles. But if you follow these steps, you’re sure to get that professional look – whether you’re at home or on the clock.
